Job Summary:
Drives buses in a safe and reliable manner. Provides friendly and courteous service to all passengers.
Provides professional passenger assistance. Maintains professional conduct in accordance with company
policies and procedures.
• Drives fixed routes and operates vehicles and equipment (wheelchair lifts/ramps, bus headsigns,
radios, fareboxes, etc.) in a safe and reliable manner.
• Operates transit vehicles for official transit business only and in accordance with the system’s
safety plan.
• Provides customer courtesy to all passengers, including providing information on bus transit
services and fares in an accurate and friendly manner.
• Provides passenger assistance in boarding and alighting, especially for customers that are elderly,
mobility impaired, or who have small children with them.
• Collects and reports passenger fares and ridership in an accurate, honest manner.
• Completes pre-trip and post-trip inspections according to procedure noting mechanical failures
and maintenance needs on an Daily Vehicle Inspection Report.
• Provides accurate survey documentation as needed (i.e.: boarding/alighting, shelters/benches,
obstructing tree limbs, maintenance issues, etc.)
• Provides professional radio communications in transmitting information and provides accurate
information regarding cancellations, no-shows, route changes, etc.
• Attends training sessions and staff meetings as required.
• Follows fixed route procedures, including calling out major intersections, providing passenger
assistance when necessary, noting check points and transfers.
• Maintains professional image and conduct, including a proper, well-maintained uniform while on

• Performs other duties as assigned by management.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess good communication skills and have the ability to verbally communicate with passengers, dispatchers and road supervisors, including use of a two-way radio and PA system. Must possess excellent or corrected vision to allow operator to have the ability to read and comprehend written material. Must have good depth perception, peripheral vision, distance vision, and color perception as is required to drive a motorized vehicle. Must possess a full range of sense of hearing, including tone, pitch, and volume, when operating transit vehicle, using two-way radio, and assisting passengers and public. Must have good manual dexterity in order to perform the basic functions of operating various keypads, including farebox, headsign and camera system. Will be required to reach, grasp and use multiple objects which include but are not limited to: steering wheel, door control, two-way radio, PA microphone, and wheelchair lift/ramp control. Will be required to sit while operating the vehicle approximately 75% of the work day. The remaining 25% of the day will require the operator to move both in the internal and exterior perimeters of the bus. This will include the performance of a pre-trip inspection of the vehicle by walking around and through the vehicle. Must possess the ability to push/pull tension of at least 50 pounds and the ability to bend, stoop and kneel to assist passengers in boarding, securing mobility devices, and/or to retrieve equipment. Will be required to twist at the knee and waist when operating vehicle, performing vehicle inspections, and securing mobility devices. Will be required to reach forward, rearward, upward, and downward when operating vehicle, performing vehicle inspections, and securing mobility devices. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or GED equivalent. Two (2) years experience as a transit operator preferred. OTHER SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS: Must hold a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger Endorsement. Must be able to pass DOT physical examination, and all required drug and alcohol tests. Must have excellent driving skills and record. Should have a special sensitivity for the needs of the transit dependent, elderly and disabled. Must be knowledgeable of the street network in the transit service area. Must maintain at least a satisfactory level of work performance evaluations. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but can on occasion be loud.
